Engrossing and entertaining, this volume will captivate devotees of Twain, steamboat buffs, lovers of Americana, and students of American Literature. A testimonial to Twain's repute as the most popular humorist of his day, these reminiscences crackle with comic anecdotes and energetic witticisms. These antebellum visions take on a bittersweet cast with the author's postwar return to the region, when railroad competition has largely doomed the commercial steamboat and the old ways of life are passing into history. The vivid and ever-engaging narrative encompasses tales of riverside town feuds, the professional vicissitudes of a riverboat gambler, dramatic accounts of life in Vicksburg as the city lay under siege during the Civil War, and many other scenes from a now-vanished way of life. Under the tutelage of the most celebrated pilot on the Mississippi, young Twain acquires the skills to navigate a constantly changing riverscape, avoiding potential collisions with other boats and traversing winding channels in the dead of night. In this classic of American literature, Twain offers lively recollections ranging from his salad days as a novice pilot to views from the passenger deck in the twilight of the river culture's heyday. His better-known name originated with the lingo of navigation, and much of his writing was informed by his shipboard adventures on one of the world's great rivers. He was Sam Clemens, steamboat pilot, before he was Mark Twain, famous author. Life on the Mississippi is a memoir by Mark Twain detailing his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before and after the American Civil War. With humor and plenty of witty asides to us readers, these ladies can really draw you into their version of history full of the miraculous and happy endings. If you missed my first review, Vlad Taltos is planned to be a roughly 17 book series (with 14 of the books out so far). I will let you know that I just finished the ninth (sorta) book in the series, Dragon, and that all of these thoughts are from those nine books. As such I thought I should do a series check-in and give you some general spoiler free thoughts as to if Vlad Taltos is worth your time. On the other hand, I have invested a lot of time and energy into nine books to not say anything about them, and I have some thoughts on my journey so far. It is difficult and repetitive for me to post reviews of each of those sequels, so when reading large series like this I hardly ever do. I enjoyed the books a bunch, so much so that I have continued and read nine of the sequels. Awhile back I reviewed the first three books in the Vlad Taltos series, starting with Jhereg, by Steven Brust. Today I am trying something a little different. Senate race.Īt the time, "no one was pleading with a twenty-seven-year-old management consultant to run for statewide office in Indiana as a Democrat," Buttigieg writes. The first was an unsuccessful run in 2010 for state treasurer against Republican Richard Mourdock, known for attempting to stop the federal bailout of Chrysler and later losing to Democrat Joe Donnelly in the 2012 U.S. In his book, he explains that he's been here before. Here are some of the takeaways from his over 300-page autobiography: He knows all about being a long-shot candidateīuttigieg is generally described in media coverage as a dark-horse presidential candidate, virtually unknown in the early poll results. In "Shortest Way Home," his book that went on sale Tuesday, Buttigieg attempts to introduce himself to people outside Indiana. The book lays out his life story, including his unsuccessful campaign for state treasurer, military service in Afghanistan, tenure as the mayor of South Bend and coming out in "Mike Pence's Indiana." He also talks about the countless times his name has been mispronounced. South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is the name in the 2020 presidential race many Americans don't know, but he's trying to change that.
