Then Andrew stumbles on information that completely transforms his and his colleagues’ understanding of what the starship Intrepid really is…and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives. Not surprisingly, a great deal of energy below decks is expendedon avoiding, at all costs, being assigned to an Away Mission. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the fact that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces, (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations, and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed. It’s a prestige posting, and Andrew is thrilled all the more to be assigned to the ship’s Xenobiology laboratory. Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456.

The protagonist’s race shouldn’t be one of them. Look, I get that when you’re diving into a series on the second book out of four the way I am, some things aren’t made apparent there because they were made clear the first book. Here’s the thing about Pain Slut: despite its cute moments and some kink that I really found sexy, it had some incredibly problematic attitudes about race/racism, respectability politics, and how it portrayed the Black main character. The series seemed interesting enough (it’s about four friends who band together to change their local BDSM community after one of their friends and a fellow sub is killed at the hands of a neglectful Dom) but I decided to get the second book since I felt that the stress might be a little lessened as we’re one book past their friend’s death. Rock’s Sub Club series was coming out so I’m a bit behind on the series since this book came out in February. I picked up Pain Slut on a lark when I saw that the fourth and final book in J. "Love Again carries initial care for profound situations of pain, finding ways to address the reality of the mourning process without completely losing itself to cliché." NYC Movie Guru "The painfully unfunny, boring and very outdated Love Again is a fake-looking romantic comedy/drama that also wants to be a Céline Dion commercial." "Yes, most of the laugh lines in Love Again are stale enough that even just hearing them kind of hurts your teeth, but for all of its blatant ridiculousness, this movie seldom tries to be funny." Culture Mix It’s a big-screen romance that aspires to making fans feel the way Dion's music does, like their hearts can go on." Pretty much every other woman is laughably inferior in every way.Īnita Blake is the absolute worst at this! She's all about feminism and crap but pretty much every other woman in that series is a psycho, a slut or a bitch. Of course nobody else can be quiet as awesome as Georgina. Georgina Kincaid series kind of does this as well. Oh, except for one who is so egotistical, she wants to kill Dru for stealing her spotlight. Why can't our female heroines stand up to a little competition?ĭru is the only woman in a male world. Why are other women always evil bitches? I mean, really. One more thing I wanted to add that is a culmination of a lot of other series that I've read. There isn't much to say other than the fact that the lack of any real story progress or further progression really annoyed me. I enjoy the characters of Graves and Christoph and the bevy of other characters introduced. There's a few interesting twists to keep you guessing. The action (what there is of it) is far better described and played out. There was far less stupid questions and actions by the characters that made me want to tear out my hair.ĭru is resourceful and clever in this book. I liked this book a lot better than its predecessor. But when her formerly liberal and secular father set out to produce a documentary about the WBC, his detached interest gradually evolved into fascination, and he moved the entire family to Kansas to join the church and live on their compound. Lauren spent her early years enjoying a normal life with her family in Florida. BANISHED is the first look inside the organization, as well as a fascinating story of adaptation and perseverance. Lauren Drain was thrust into that cult at the age of 15, and then spat back out again seven years later. Since no organized religion will claim affiliation with the WBC, it's perhaps more accurate to think of them as a cult. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the WBC's right to picket funerals. And they aren't going anywhere: in March, the U.S. The WBC is fervently anti-gay, anti-Semitic, and anti- practically everything and everyone. Perhaps you've seen their pickets on the news, the members holding signs with messages that are too offensive to copy here, protesting at events such as the funerals of soldiers, the 9-year old victim of the recent Tucson shooting, and Elizabeth Edwards, all in front of their grieving families.
